"Revival of a fallen origin / R.F.O" is a graphic novel in progress which speculates on the projected outcome of Downtown Houston using current problems and inherent idiosyncrasies of the past. Downtown Houston which is the origin point of the city, came to fruition through a scam based advertisement, marketing of the land. the Allen brothers, who pitched the idea of a highly vegetative and lush land ideal for people to live on was the scam. Houston was a marshy flat wetland clustered with mosquitoes, the opposite of habitable.
The project takes into account the current problems within downtown of floods, vacancies, homelessness and lack of destinations. These issues lend for a story line to emerge where the solution seems like downtown needs to become the place the Allen brothers had proclaimed, A land with topography, vegetation and density. The final chapter is a downtown with a mixture of the scammed proposal and the current condition. This change in image takes place throughout 5 phases.
R.F.O is a 5 phase theoretical implementation of an infrastructure which foresees a change in the image and function of downtown #Houston from the year 2030 and beyond. The project takes place in the Houston central business district which currently is vacant and homogeneous in its content/context, therefore slowly losing its value and identity as an origin which originally brought about commerce and financial rigor to the city of Houston, albeit using shady tactics and phony marketing. The project takes into consideration the shady past and future issues such as vacancy, lack of zoning, energy shifts and identity shifts within the Houston and global context, and envisions an infrastructure which allows density and multi cultural programs to be added in an ad-hoc manner.
R.F.O is not the final identity, rather an amalgamation of numerous identities and histories which is achieved by the additions of other projects and other infrastructures to finally create an organism capable of moving, storing and preserving data, biology, and daily life. It is an infrastructure of phases and components, time and typologies, Ideas and methods, clarity and contradictions. It is a layer of layers which slowly becomes a ruin within the city and immediately regenerates to become a new face of its context. No longer is the site reflected as a place eroded by time, economics, politics or sheer environmental pressures, but rather a self sustaining amalgamation of systems which make downtown Houston a self sustaining ecology. It is an ever changing infrastructure that facilitates reinvention of the genetic makeup of downtown Houston. A vision for the future of a post industrial, post oil and post sprawl city.
