After a period of several years of vacancy the former Belastingkantoor (tax office) in Assen is in use again. The interior underwent a complete upgrade to serve as an inspiring and healthy office environment the next few years. Commissioned by the Rijksgebouwendienst (Government Buildings Agency) burovanplan - in collaboration with Nijeboer-Hage and Adviesburo Van der Plas - developed an integrated plan which the interior turns into a contemporary working environment.
A few tactical architectural interventions changed the structuralist office building from 1978 by architect Hans van Olphen from a cellular office building into a mainly open-plan office. The explicitly present support structure and the new carpeting is used to contribute to a better orientation in the interior and office organisation. That results in a dynamic and bright appearance in a "rigid" building. The furnishing of the office is mainly done with reused furniture from other government offices. The building offers - after the upgrade - more than two hundred workstations.
