"Plug and Play," a design concept that restructures a school in a recreational and eco-friendly way through a game of assembling small “boxes to live in.” The first adaptation consists in covering the existing building with a new, thermodynamically effective skin in order to reach the ecological label.
As the work had to be done on an occupied site, we decided to divide the whole operation into a system of punctual and limited interventions in order to not interfere with the running of the school.
The conception of the project relies on these minimal interventions which add up and connect with the existing building : “the Plugs.” The choice of wood construction allows a considerable diminution of the duration of interventions, and ensures neatness together with a low degree of impact on the building site.
These small boxes, specifically designed for the size of a child, are made up to adapt to the needs of the school and to accommodate new activities. They come as an addition to school rooms (desks, benches, shelves, nooks for reading or playing.) or as extensions to the school (rest rooms, classrooms) and provide an addition of both technical and recreational programs.
The schoolyard has also been refitted as a clearing strewn with grassy mounds.
