“RESTRAINED LUXURY”
The project is about peeling away one’s “affected” layers or influences, leaving a pure confluence of a select palette of materials used in their true form. A truly timeless home. Located in the busy but leafy neighbourhood of Breach Candy, Mumbai, the home and its large terrace is meant to be both an oasis and a very personal expression of the owner himself.
On the one hand the home was to be a fresh start for the owner but on the other there were a whole host of memories, passions and experiences from the past that needed a place too. These constituted original mid-century and modern furniture pieces, artworks of Indian masters – M.F.Hussain’s Ganesha series, K.K.Hebbar’s ballet dance, photographs, sculptural objects and a comprehensive collection of books.
There is a consistent and intentional use of quiet materials like teak wood, Limestone and white walls through the house to set the spartan yet crafted tone of design. This allows the contextual and collected memories to come to the foreground and be the hero of the space.
Whereas the intangible associations and memories such as the love for reading, aromas from growing up in family kitchens have been manifested in terms of a strong connectivity between the reading, dining and larder areas which allows the user to amalgamate the many joys of life – Cooking, Food, Literature and Social interactions.
The mandate was “Restrained Luxury” and this can be seen in the handcrafted details such as that of the wood skirting which frames the limestone floor and has a groove that turns along the vertical with the doorframe. Another example is a shelf in the living room, which is made to appear light and horizontal because of the double inwards chamfer along the edges. The challenging lack of good ceiling height is addressed by doing away with a false ceiling and running the lights through a teak strip that frames each space.
The bedrooms and bathrooms also follow a muted palette of colours and materials. All and all feeding into the overall theme of the home.
Most of the entertaining and hosting happens on the outdoor terrace, which has stunning open vistas of the city. There is a use of interesting elements like the cast in situ concrete bench with the backdrop of the concrete walls, the repurposed barrel for all weather table, the outdoor kitchen and the herb garden.
