We dealt with an ancient building in the historic centre of Pontevedra in a condition of major neglect. The past owners, view the collapse risk, made an unlucky intervention, using concrete pillars and slabs in a poor way. Some auxiliary buildings are attached to the dividing wall of the plot, separating the house from a small garden where a big orange tree appears. The building could be dated in the XVII century.
The intervention will seek the complete restoration of the building, keeping intact the façades.
The house has two floors, the lower level is projected as an open space for the kitchen, dining room and living room. In the center, a large hole, which go through the house until the roof, allows natural light to reach this space. A box of wooden slats, lacquered in white, attached to the dividing wall, houses the toilet and contains the stairs which goes up to the upper floor, surrounding the main bedroom.
Circular holes make this element singular, facing to that of the existing façades, made by chestnut wooden joinery, lacquered in light color. On the upper level, we are also looking for this idea of opened spaces, trying to give continuity to the spaces through the use of mobile glass elements that provide versatility according to the owner’s needs.
The design of the house is conditioned by the initial premises of the owners, which are related with the parameters of the Fenh Shui architecture and that we want to be an added value to the house, not a limitation.
Following these parameters, is not possible to let the structure visible, so we decide to make a structural framework like a cage, inside the existing walls, and only keep visible the wood structural elements which cover the traditional “patín”. Above the structural framework we place the dry slab made by high density CLT wood (between 400-500Kg/m3). A eucalyptus flooring is placed over this slab, even in the bathrooms, attached by glue to the 14 cm thickness panels.
We make the most of the spaces under the roof, which are generated over the bedrooms boxes, as a meditation space without any facing.
The ancient attached buildings will be use as a rest and relax space, with a small water layer in visual contact with the small green garden.
