The monastery is situated on a ledge high up above the plains of the Gotthard Route, which connects north and south Europe. It is located on the top of a rocky cone exposed to the west, east of the village of Claro at about 600 meters above the sea level.
The walled monastic complex occupies an area of about 7000 square meters, divided into about 2200 square meters of built area and 4800 square meters of outdoor spaces: the cloister, the churchyard and the garden / orchard. The various buildings that set the monastery are located in the west part of the complex, orientated to the valley. In the east part, fenced by stone walls, the ancillary buildings, the farms, the apiaries, the wash house, the gardens and the orchard are located.
The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1490 and is the oldest monastery in the canton of Tessin. The typical monastery complex grew organically on the cliffs in the course of the last decades, becoming a hamlet that today comprises of 120 rooms. Five hundred years of uninterrupted spiritual presence, work and prayer, true to the motto “Oboedentia sine mora, ora et labora”. The restoration measures rediscover the typology and architecture of the original monastery site, which was obscured by hapless interventions, especially in the 20th century. They also define a new balance of contrasts and a combination of old and new. This Recherche patiente required extensive analyses of the materials and constructions that characterise the building. Local materials have been joined together in a simple way. In this sense, the monastery is a reconstitution of the location, analogous architecture in the true sense of the word.
