Adam’s previous practice DRAW was one of six invited by Lend Lease to participate in a limited design competition on an important site, linking Barangaroo South to King Street Wharf.

Our proposal explored a dramatic and complex form that grew from analysis of pedestrian movements and adjoining building alignments. The consciously heavy Coreten screen is finely calibrated to optimise both solar control and views to the harbour.

The site forms part of a new urban space linking the foreshore to Wynyard Walk via Transport Place. The three level restaurant building mediates the misalignement of the residential buildings along Barangaroo and King Street Wharf. Nestled in a new urban space, this building is experienced “in-the-round”.

The form of our dynamic proposal evolved from a detailed study of opportunities and constrains. The upper levels boldly cantilever seven metres to create sheltered ground floor spaces and a daring dining experience above. Corners and edges accentuate views to and from the site.

A range of dramatic interior spaces ensures that patrons not seated at the waters edge are provided with a memorable dining experience.

The ground plane slides in beneath the building offering a public place of refuge.

A Coreten screen demonstrates varied porosity based on solar orientation, internal program and curation of views. The weathered patina of the metal surface provides a subtle reference to the industrial heritage of the site and provides a dramatic contrast to the refined detailing of adjacent developments.
