Fall 2009The concepts explored in this experiment are largely concerned with the devise of a resonant system of acoustic, lighting, and programmatic conditions in an attempt to recalibrate the lobby’s scale, accessibility, and use/usability. The new lobby operates as a vehicle in navigate amongst Avery Fisher’s expansive columnar grid, yet challenges the orthogonal perception of the space.By adopting a language - both semantic and architectural in scope - derived from a character collision analysis study, a new cascading facade flows from the buildings upper plaza lip and “ripples” throughout the lobby, creating new spaces that address both highly specific programmatic requirements and offer unexpected hybrid zones. As a result, Avery Fisher now faces Lincoln Center plaza a lifted curtain, at once porous and inviting to both familiar faces and unexpected visitors.
