RIBA Regional Award Winner 2016. The site is a former garage/industrial site but has the remains of the medieval Rye town wall (a scheduled ancient monument) running through. The scheme is predominantly for residential use but does have 2 retail units on the ground floor to the street front. The residential units include 6 flats, 2 pent houses, 1 studio unit and a detached house. Generally the project takes influence from shipyard/harbour front/beach hut style architecture with the steep pitched roofs and dark timber cladding. The difference is in the detailing with hidden window frames, big glass openings, hidden gutters and pipes etc. to give a sharp crisp contemporary twist. The roofs at either end are very steep and low to meet the heights of the adjoining buildings on either side, which should look quite dramatic from the street.
