The renovated building is situated in the
historic centre of city Koper. The old
part of the building dates back to the
period of Gothic and is made of stone. Its location presents a completion of
the ancient building set oriented towards the the square. The form of the extension seeks to establish a
relationship with the old Gothic volume, the square and adjacent boundaries. This has resulted in a respectful dialog
between two distinct architectural languages. A green buffer between the new
and the old part of the building
generates an external atrium. The restoration of the Ribiški trg building
returned the structure to its original purity, while introducing up-to-date
building systems. The outer stone walls of the old building were perserved,
while the inner construction was entirely
replaced in order to adapt it to the functional program and the new priorities
– art gallery. The groundfloor of the extension
building is translucent in order to create a vivid dialog between inner and
outer space. There is a cafe and a
terrace under a cantilever. At the firs floor there are two
appartments, facing outdoors on Nort and East facade as well as overlooking the
inner atrium. The third appartment is placed in the attic of the old building. The
flat gren roof of the extension is used as a terrace.
