Résidence Pontiac is located in the dense residential landscape of Plateau Mont-Royal, a few steps from the bustle of rue Saint-Denis and rue Mont-Royal. A sector that has in its essence the pleasure of living in the city.
Rue Pontiac is a small, narrow street, mainly made up of duplexes, whose cramped lots and the density of the built environment invite both a social life, but also the introversion of a personal and family life. The project therefore aimed to respectfully maintain the close link between private, personal and interior life with the exterior excitement of the extraordinary neighborhood life of this small haven of the Plateau Mont-Royal.
The original house built around 1885 is simple and modest. It is part of a small 2-storey working-class residential complex. The structure made of large wooden planks, typical of the years of its construction, was simple and efficient. The square plan of 600 square feet per floor was made up of compact interior spaces that were sometimes unsuitable for contemporary life. Given the density of the interior spaces, the living rooms of the house located on the ground floor were very dark. In addition, the footprint of the house takes up most of the land. This therefore left the occupants with only a very small backyard in the shadow of the house and sandwiched between neighboring buildings.
Access to the roof and vertical penetration of the floors became a preferred design choice for the project. This direction would make it possible to offer bright spaces on all floors while offering a pleasant outdoor space with full sun.
The complete project consisted of the renovation of the ground floor, the first floor as well as the addition of a mezzanine terrace on the roof. The arrangement of the roof allows you to take advantage of maximum space within the house and it is this idea of opening upwards which guided the design of the project. Upon entering the residence, a well of light crosses the floors, licking the stairs so as to invite the ascent to the new terrace. This breakthrough illuminates the living spaces on the ground floor which are completely open concept, giving the impression of grandeur to the small house. The private rooms upstairs allow the circulation to benefit from this generous natural light. Once you arrive at the top, the sun hangs over a contemplation room opening onto the outdoor terrace, perfect for enjoying the hot summer days! We find ourselves there like a child in his hiding place in the tree. Urban refuge ideal for reflection and dreaming.
On the facade, vegetation invades the wall up to the roof terrace, reinforcing the impression of nature in the city and the idea of emergence on the roof.
Inside, the wooden structure and the large original planks piece by piece are exhibited in order to give authenticity to the place. A notion of temporality bringing warmth and comfort, which does not hide its past link with its ancestor, the rural house.
The refined contemporary layout and furniture highlight the period elements by contrast. Nevertheless, wood remains omnipresent as a link between eras. Pale shades and white color help to enlarge the space and bring it a little more brightness.
The Pontiac residence therefore offers its occupants a simple, peaceful and authentic interior which is respectful of its context, its neighborhood and its history.
