In an apartment of Shanghai downtown, the owner wants to live in a Minimalism but quality way. By making a giant furniture of wood and putting the essential living facility in, we could have a wide open space: living room, dinner and kitchen.
This giant furniture is centered in the apartment and extended towards three functional directions. It extends to the kitchen and becomes the cabinet and coffee table; It extends to the living room and becomes the storage cabinet; It extends to the bedroom and bathroom and forms a diagonal entry which is the space surrounded by the washing sink, bedroom doors and bathroom doors.
In terms of material, we simply picked the plywood board with birch finish layer to make the furniture. It has a rich texture of multiply stripes on the side of the plywood. To expose this, we use a lot reveals to contrast it with the smooth and light birch finish. Also, some of the reveals can be opened up in order to remove the usual metal handles. By using minimal material to make this giant furniture, which also separated the different height baseboards and hid the vent, we utilized the character of the material itself in a maximum way.
