The client expressed his desire for a large swimming pool and a large entertainment area. The importance of shade from the sun was also expressed.
* The position of the structure in the lot leading to the structure’s design: in fact, everything began in finding the right position of the structure for the plot, and where to open up the structure.
The northern and eastern sides are in a very close vicinity to neighboring structures (6 meters from house to house), and they are narrow with not enough natural light.
This led us to open up the structure to the southern and western sides due to the fact that the plot is a corner plot and these sides border on the road and so are significantly farther away from the other structures (diagram 1).
Opening the structure to the south after the characterization of the structure’s position created a light problem that needed to be addressed in the southern side. On the one hand most hours of the day the sun is lighting up the place, but on the other hand this is very strong sun in a southern city in Israel, and without the right shade the family will not be able to sit in the seating area at all and the living space will have the greenhouse effect. The solution was “drawing” a large roof south of the structure while calculating the needed width of the roof that would provide shade for the sun rays on the south side during the summer days.
That created the large roof which shades the seating area. This direction led to taking out the parents’ wing so that it would hover over the swimming pool, provide additional shading over the seating area and clear the main space of the house to create passing spaces, with a bridge that connects the parents’ wing and the teenage girl’s room. This is where we integrate the required functionality of the program to create a wing for the teenage girl while creating a proper separation with the parents’ wing, but without hurting the necessary family intimacy. Since in our opinion, the moment eye contact is created, there will be interaction between the family members. This interaction will be achieved by the creation of the bridge between the two wings and spaces that pass between them.
The main idea of opening the structure toward the southern side was to plan the public spaces so that they would all turn toward the seating area parallel to the swimming pool. The wish was that all of the public areas will fully overlook the swimming pool with access to it. For this reason the entire safe haven totally faces the swimming pool, with the possibility to enter the garden and the yard, the table area also faces this side, and of course the living space. On the other side, the entrance to the structure is on the western side, so that when you enter the house you cannot see the kitchen but you see an impressive passageway, on its one side you see the back of the 6 meter walnut coated kitchen cupboards, and on its other side a console staircase designed as shark teeth. It was executed with a complex detail planning of the stair teeth exiting through the glass wall which is used as a railing. Over the entrance hinge of the structure, parallel to it on the first floor, which is covered on its lower part with copper, and so are the stairs. They reverberate and return to the main entrance door, which is also made of copper.
In the characterization of the southern façade you can see the massive column which holds the roof in the south-western side. Actually, the idea was to create a column which continues the top beam, at the same length. It created a space in which the entire barbeque kitchen was planned, including it being closed with a rolled up shutter which is hidden when not in use. On the opposite side there is a swimming pool and an outside storage which are hidden from the eye.
