House, East Hampton, 2002A wooden house from the 1970s was reprogrammed and renovated to adapt to the needs of a family of six. The structure was simplified and filled out to maximize its size, while remaining within the existing footprint. A horizontal recess in the front facade served to create a covered entrance whose sense of privacy was counteracted by openness on the garden side. The upstairs kitchen was moved to the ground floor to connect to a large deck and pool that are an integral part of the house and serve as an outdoor living area.photos by Christian Schaulin
