This renovation project metamorphosed an existing duplex into a contemporary residence while preserving the characteristic charm of Montreal domestic architecture. The first floor living areas were redesigned to maximize natural light and create functional spaces. A new wooden staircase links the basement, first floor and first floor. In continuity with the stairwell, a skylight brings natural light to the center of the residence.
The first floor has been reconfigured to accommodate bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main bathroom is adjacent to the master bedroom and includes a shower with steam bath. The second bathroom is reserved for the children and includes a laundry area. The master bedroom is a living room, with wooden storage furniture as the only partition. A horizontal bookcase and a Saint-Marc stone step serve as a threshold to the roof terrace.
The architects collaborated with local craftsmen to create bespoke furniture and an architectural staircase. This approach gives the project a unique touch and underlines the importance of supporting local know-how. Architectural elements such as original doors and frames were retained to preserve the authenticity of the site. The judicious use of natural materials blends harmoniously with the duplex's original features. The original hardwood floors, carefully sanded and restored, cohabit with touches of stone and steel, creating a balance between tradition and modernity.
