Residence ภ : An Architect’s House
As an architect, the house is something, I have always been thinking about in the past twenty years. Working on houses make me think about the life, thus designing one for myself is eventually becoming a process of the designing my own life.

Started from the land plot we acquired at the end of a small alley in Rama IX area, Bangkok. Then I started to think, it is better convenient to have a house at can accommodate our family with three children, my parents and my wife’s parents to shares facility and gets together.

However, the plot is considerably small compared to the required function and number of bedrooms expected.

Certainly, i want a simple house, easy to build and maintenance, and maximize the potential of our land plot, allows our family to meet and get together while maintain a certain degree of privacy. Giving the sense of protection from the outside world. Provides cross ventilation and proper natural lighting, yet protected from the rain and harsh sun light. A house with the calmness, tranquility and give such life energy to us all.

The plot is a simple rectangle shape with access road to the north, adjacent house the east and south, and the west, a 5 stories apartment building, i designed 15 years ago. Of all four sides, it is only to the west we can predict the future, since it belongs to our family. The other three sides are rather unpredictable, since it might be developed for larger scale building.

in this case, we try to layout the house closed to the boundary as much as allowed by the local code, and carved the courtyard to the apartment building on the west side, thus this building helps protecting harsh afternoon light

It is a solid house from outside but rather open to the courtyard. The vertical fin column protects the privacy to the apartment and the sun light, still they allow visibility to our family to each other.

The exterior facade to the north and south, have the horizontal strip window, recessed in the wall, at the above head level but reachable. Underneath these windows, we utilized as closet. This, we get the proper lighting, privacy, able to clean all windows and maximized the function out of them.

At the rear end corner of the house, we placed the spiral staircase, with comfortable scale and landing. Extending the line of balustrade gives the sense of continuity. Around the perimeter of this staircase we also use it as the full height bookshelf where every family member passes daily. This is a great chance to exposed the attention of children to the curated books.

The design element of this house is distinguished by the simple vertical, lesser to collect dust and water than the horizon.

The comfortable color scheme is balanced with the natural material such as hand bricks with the variation pattern, from the solid, ventilated and alphabeted shape “ภ” the initial of our three children, as symbol, value, meaning to our house.

Eventually this house is the ideology of myself to life, that contains and completes memories, heritage, hopes and dream to us all.
