Under the auspices of Frédéric Brouillet and Bertrand Dubus (Atelier Puzzler), the heart of the city of Evry (Essonne), a vast territory of about 10 Ha, has in ten years completely metamorphosed. This recomposition of the city center perfectly reflects the new chapter of the urban history of Evry, thus becoming a city in its own name and no longer a new city.
The objectives of the project were numerous. These included connecting the urban center to the agglomeration and composing the heart of the city. "The major challenge of this urban operation was to reinforce the identity and cohesion of the center, to compose a linkage urbanism, an urbanism that 'enrolls' the existing facilities, and finally an urbanism based on a qualification and a hierarchy of public space, "explains Bertrand Dubus.
The bias of the agency, opposed to slab urbanism, was the reconquest of the ground floor. This approach has made it possible to prioritize the road structure to compose the heart of the city and to constitute the fabric of a public 'space' open to personalized landscapes.
The composition consists of a succession of courts commanded by existing public facilities within a heterogeneous urban structure designed with wide openings to the sky, the 'sleepers', and 'backstage' that give the neighborhood its warm and reassuring scale conducive to hosting activities.
The planning party thus stages two families of public spaces. The crossings, east-west routes that serve the transits through the urban center that they connect to the large territory, and backstage, north-south routes that serve the district with a discontinuous alignment. The depths of view alternate with landscapes of a domestic scale.
"It was a question of not denying the existing and the history but of proposing a place of confidence, a peaceful place of the balance of power", underlines Bertrand Dubus. "The architecture that emerged in Evry no longer looks at the architecture of the previous generation as obsolete. This is taken into account, inserted in a perspective. This allows to build a memory, essential to urban life, its history, "he says.
The rigorous composition of Atelier Puzzler made it possible to effectively integrate the multifunctionality of the various programs and, paradoxically, to leave architects a great deal of freedom of expression. The first commercialization of housing began in May 2008 with Horizon South, the first batches being delivered in 2011. Many architects take turns since to offer a peaceful residential course to the inhabitants while the equipment, such as the scientific center of Evry inaugurated in 2017, almost in the city center, complete the overall scheme and give it its dynamic.
This urban project reaffirms a modernity and an architectural ambition and signs "the urban renewal of Evry" according to the wishes of the mayor, Manuel Valls, expressed in 2008.
