Times Square is repeatedly a destination for our guests, the lights and scale never fails to awe. It has always inspired all todream big and our proposal’s intention supports New York's visionary future.Barcodes encode messages to represent information. The Uniform Product Codes (UPC), have become an essential part ofmodern civilization, from cataloging to product information to sales. Their use is widespread, and the technology behind themare constantly improving. The new plaza design consists of a series of over-scaled barcodes; solid black and white bars of varying widths placedperpendicular to Broadway to mark the newly formed pedestrian zones. These plazas can become exhibition centers for publicart, unique events, and performances. Patterns are far from random, but encoded with messages of hope, dreams, love, andplace, words often repeated when describing NYC. Graphically, the design is bold, iconic and evokes NYC's skyline, whileremaining open to interpretation. Functionally, it serves as a visual speed bump, the repetition reinforces a North to Southmovement while their East to West orientation encourages one to stray off the path, directing the user to an island or into a retaillocation. Imagine skipping along from line to line, the barcodes repurposed into a hopscotch board, a child jumping from line toline alongside their parents. The simplicity in graphic design allows quick installation and budget considerations. Color reflectivecoatings will be added to avoid heat island affect during the day, while providing a retro reflective coating at night, reflecting thebig lights of Broadway. Our proposal will further NYC's visionary plan, reinforcing Times Square as a world class plaza. Together,
