The city of Boulder is wedged between nearby Denver’s softly flowing topography and the massive craggy walls of the Rocky Mountains. Steep, thick layered rock formations called the Flatirons rise above the city as an impenetrable barrier, as if the end of the world.
Boulder has attracted a relatively young, well to do population, focusing on fitness and love of the spectacular nearby mountain ranges. Spare time is filled with athletic activities, good food, and socializing. Among this demographic there is no readily observable culture rooted in architectural, or for that matter any style at all. However, a sense of curiosity and exploration prevails. It is a perfect place for architectural exploration.
When the assignment came for a residential duplex sited along a busy, albeit nondescript street in a fairly typical neighborhood, Super 3 Studio used this opportunity for experimentation; invent a language from the context of topographical extremes. And in the process introduce new energy to the project’s unexceptional generic surroundings.
A simple box perched on top of a small exposed concrete garage establishes the fundamental massing.
Recalling the expressive geography of the Flatirons, angled, sloping walls, jutting beyond the street facade, and weaving inward, envelop all major spaces. Semi private, elevated gardens act as a transitional space between the living areas and the street. A transparent cloud of LED powered small sticks and wires hovering over the gardens give a sense of closure and unifies the street facade.
Sculptural intersecting planes rising two stories, and undulating along ceilings, are used to reimagine traditional notions of kitchen, dining, living, sleeping. As in a movie set, back sides of the planes create another set of experiences when purposed as the enclosure for bedroom suites.
Daylight enters through tall windows from all sides, creating a changing kaleidoscopic rhythm during the day as angled surfaces of wall and ceilings change hue and tone.
The interior conveys a feeling as if living inside a white sculpture, with concrete floors in the living areas and white rubber flooring in the loft above. In the living area a colorful low slung seating arrangement is lifted above the floor for spatial continuity, and is a playful counterpoint to the strong architectural atmosphere. The demising wall between the units is clad in teak paneling as a warm back ground to the cooler surfaces.
Carved from the interstitial space between angled walls and the enclosing box of the building, the master bedroom suites are defined with surfaces in varying textures of white: smooth, reflective and as peeling paint. A bold counterpoint is provided by an opposite surface clad in oak veneer stamped with a large scale motif.
The project will be built using simple wood frame techniques. The garage will be constructed of board formed exposed concrete, the residential facades will use treated wood paneling. Facing the street, second floor glazing will have a gradient frit pattern to allow for views while preserving privacy.
The project will be net- zero energy.
