The Rehabilitation Project of the Monastery of São João de Cabanas (located in Afife, Viana do Castelo) had as its main objective the recovery of the old building in order to adapt it in to a Guest House Program, which combines Turist Accommodation with Gastronomic and Cultural aspects.
This ancient Benedictine Monastery, of medieval origin but rebuilt in the 18th century, which was owned by the poet Pedro Homem de Mello in the 20th century, was in a precarious state of conservation when the project began (2020).
We began the designing process with a constructive and pathological analysis, which combined with historical and archaeological research allowed us to understand the different phases of its construction and occupation, namely its programmatic distribution - highlighting two periods: the monastic phase (18th century) and the residential phase (from the 19th to the 21st century).
We seek to restore dignity and constructive truth to the building, assuming the combination of the three stages of construction, and seeking that this intervention constitutes a new synthesis that allows a clear reading of the architectural and heritage values, at the same time that it prepares the building for its new use, in an option of integration and continuity with the past.
The intervention was carried out with the majority use of traditional construction materials and techniques, recovering the wooden structures of floors, ceilings and roofs; preserving the stoneworks; replacing lime mortars; and also carrying out conservation and restoration work on elements such as wooden frames, and the integrated artistic component (tiles from the 18th century, altars, plaster ceilings and decorative stucco).
