Refugium is a beachfront apartment located on Costa da Caparica, 15 minutes away from Lisbon, Portugal. The renovation was inspired by the simplicity of the original fishermen’s houses from the 18th century, in order to guarantee a serene and comfortable space. Here we go back to essential.
More than aesthetic concerns, the careful choice of the entire process was the main focus to eliminate the negative environmental impact of the renovation. To avoid rubble and committed to the principle of zero waste, the original project was kept and demolition was practically non-existent, reusing as many existing elements as possible. The original kitchen and bathroom, which did not match with the new project’s concept, were removed to be reused and donated to needy families. Rather than being demolished and to ensure the homogenization of the entire space, the floor is covered with Microlime, based on lime and non-toxic natural additives. Its sandy and pigmented appearance, reinforces a strong relationship with the site. The ecological principles of the intervention also extended to the decoration, where an extreme effort was made to collaborate with local craftsmen, as well as with other nationally produced pieces. For a harmonious contrast and to help the air quality, the national pine wood plays a decisive role on the project and was used on the furniture and wardrobes. We believe that the main principles of the intervention came out valued, as the social impact, sustainability and innovation.
Refugium is a project that looks outwards, that introduces the coastal environment in which it is inserted, although it maintains an inner world of intimacy and family relationships. The balance between the new and the existing ends up ensuring a more honest and genuine result.
