Sited on Van Brunt Street, we were to design a music academy that housed a school, administration offices, and 2 performances halls open to the public. My concept was to create a system of organization based on an architectural progression; much like a piece of music is defined by a progression. I captured the procession through the site by documenting the experience through collages of site photos. These collages then were translated into lines and then translated into figure and ground slides. These slides were extruded and connected as a model, so the model can expand and contract. The spatial relationships between the slides were studied lofted into volumes awhile the slides turned into structure. This was applied into an aperture that can expand and contract, and this informed the forma and layout of the design. The structural slides are transparent and help define the progression through the building as you walk between them. The building progresses from public spaces, including the lobby and café areas, to shared space which are the performance halls, into private space, the classrooms and offices. There are two entrances a public entrance ad an entrance that connects to the private space. The outdoor plaza area is raised in areas to act like a stoop found throughout Brooklyn, this becomes an area of congregation as well as a place to hold outdoor performances.
