The Rectoria is the most iconic building on the campus of Monterey Tech and one of the most important in the history of modern architecture in Mexico. Since its construction, the use has changed many times. The building is also defined by a mural by Gonzalez Camarena that represents the battle between innovation and lack of purpose. Science is represented in the upper portion while snakes and dark warriors are located in the bottom representing dark forces that will be conquered by innovation and technology. In approaching the renovation, there was a lot of concern about doing an intervention in an iconic building. The mural, however, served as a guide in advocating for a need to innovate. The resulting design replaced the façade under the mural, restored the plaza, and made it more connected with the people and the campus.
