This project is an ambitious initiative aimed at reviving and strengthening the cultural and community life of Trakai. The reconstruction is taking place in one of the most significant locations in the city – the historic Vytauto Street, next to Lake Totoriškiai, so the architectural solutions here are being carefully coordinated with the unique surroundings.
The project will renovate and expand the cultural center and create a new complex comprising public spaces and buildings adapted to the needs of different communities. It will become a center of culture and attraction for both local residents and visitors to the city.
The authors of the design proposals are WALL architects and the Aplan team.
Contextuality and connection with the historical environment
Taking into account the urban structure of Trakai's old town, the cultural center is divided into several smaller blocks. This composition allows the building to blend harmoniously into its surroundings – the new scale of the buildings reflects the principles of the historic development, while the forms and materials are subtly adapted to the existing architectural context. This ensures visual and functional continuity within the urban structure.
Revitalization of public spaces
One of the most important objectives of the project is to create a vibrant network of public spaces that meets the contemporary needs of the community. The main axis is the newly formed representative square connecting Vytauto Street with Totoriškių Lake. This axis is highlighted by an amphitheater and a marina with a pontoon bridge – spaces that invite people to gather, watch events, relax, or enjoy nature.
New buildings and functions
The reconstructed complex will consist of four main buildings designed for different social groups and activities:
• A cultural center with expanded interior spaces and new functions, such as an open-roof auditorium with a view of the lake.
• A library that integrates contemporary spaces for reading, learning, and community activities.
• A youth space focused on creativity, self-expression, and social inclusion.
• A tourist information center for visitors to the city and the promotion of cultural tourism.
Sustainability and energy efficiency class A++
The project is being developed in accordance with the highest principles of energy efficiency and sustainability. All buildings are designed to meet the A++ energy class, and materials are selected with a focus on durability and lower environmental impact. Glued wood structures and natural materials are used in public spaces. The roof is covered with silo trees, which not only adds aesthetic and ecological value, but also helps regulate the microclimate by retaining rainwater and protecting the roof from overheating.
Sustainable wooden structures – part of the architectural concept
The wooden structures in this project are not only a sustainable solution, but also an integral part of the architectural concept and aesthetic expression. They were designed by the project architects, the WALL team, as an architectural idea that marks a clear direction. This structural concept is the result of their creativity, which we, the engineers at Aplan, are helping to implement. Wood not only reduces CO₂ emissions, but also points the way forward for the entire modern construction industry, which we believe should move towards a more sustainable and responsible approach to the environment.
