The building to be
reconstructed is located on Vasilievsky Ostrov in Saint Petersburg,
in the block bounded by Sredny Ave., Shkipersky Protok, Shevchenko
and Detskaya Streets. The block is a green recreation area in a
residential neighbourhood, its construction going back to various
years, and is located in close vicinity to the Passenger Sea
Terminal. The reconstruction concept implies that the existing
building of Priboy cinema theater will be preserved and adapted for a
new function. In order to expand the area around the building, a new
structure on a separate foundation with cantilever joints to existing
structures is created. On the side of the main facade in the extended
part there will be the central entrance with a sunken hall and a
multi-height foyer. The old cinema hall will transform into the main
showcase of the complex. In the part of the building attached at the
Shevchenko Street, the second entrance with a hall servicing the club
scene with a media library and a bar, exhibition halls, a restaurant
and administrative premises will be located. In order to keep the
illusion of shattered boundaries between the building and the park
that surrounds it, a column replicated multiple times is used.
Spreading beyond the heated area footprint, the column interacts with
the long-stemmed trees in the park and turns from a structural
element into an element of landscaping. A multilayered structure
shapes the facade of the building. Its inner perimeter is formed by
transparent stained glass, at some distance from which a
self-supported framework with mirror-like metal plates attached to it
is located.
