A Christmas tree is the epitome of holiday symbols, however, the typical reason for this is because of the ornaments which adorn it. What if the tree became the central focus rather than what was placed upon it?The entire design of the Rebirth Tree inspires thought rather than need of decoration. It seems contradictory that a Christmas tree is often a dead fir tree or made
from plastic, neither of which hold a breath of life. The installation of the Rebirth Tree is made from Taiwanese Hinoki wood gathered from a
demolished Taiwan University Dormitory built almost 100 years ago. Therefore, the material has, in a way, returned to its former self: it is a tree once more.The collection, shipping, and
assembly process of the recycled wood are all kept local and without need of complicated construction methods. The mixture of recycled old
wood and new technology attempts to celebrate the value of tradition and
the present, as the tree incorporates both the materiality of the aged
and the sharp form of the new.
