The owner of this early 20th century country house, whom made significant wealth in property, called upon Janine Stone Design to develop this residence into a contemporary jewel box of comfort and refinement. The new design scheme evokes a mood that is a radical departure from what one might expect from a country house interior.
A strong reference to the unerring elegance of the 1930’s and 1940’s strongly informed the new look and was a preference of the owners. Placing their love of art at the centre of the decorative scheme was a key focus with stunning realisations in the style of the Baroque master, Caravaggio and the humanity of the Italian Renaissance. A dramatic and rich palette of ebony; claret and jewel tones accented with bone and alabaster showcase a masterful sense of colour. Artisans worked on one-of-a-kind designed furniture pieces, architectural details and finishes. The attention to detail was paramount with finely mitred joinery, stone and mirrors to create a seamless elegance throughout the home. Many unique and rare veneers were used including snake wood and these were richly layered with lacquer and polished with fine waxes. The result is a heady blend of the exotic and richly decadent with an unmistakable spirit and crackling self confidence, creating a breathtaking mix of modernity and classicism.
The drawing room, library and study feature wenge wood flooring in basket weave and herringbone patterns and floating ceilings featuring stepped detailing work in harmony to create dramatic set pieces for each space. Luxe solutions to storage with more than a nod to James Bond gadgetry offer ingenious answers to where you store your stuff. The sound system and television in the drawing room have been concealed within a clever floating wall of art that can be revealed at the touch of a button for full effect. Lighting is provided by a programmed Lutron© system, casting a warm and subtle glow to the library, drawing room and bedroom suites and throwing gentle pools and drifts of illumination throughout the property to harness the feel of warmth, adding atmosphere and focus to specific areas, and highlighting important works of art and treasured object d’art.
The stunning double height hallway with roof top sky lights increase the available natural light and spotlight a beautiful balustrade and staircase, which have been honed from unfinished brass, so in time, will develop a rich natural patina. The master bathroom features a shimmering white Thasos marble floor with contrasting hand polished dark-wood timber panelling. The sunken marble bath sets the tone for a spa-inspired environment and has been designed to fill within a short space of time. There are many concealed storage spaces, cleverly incorporated behind mirrors to ensure a clutter-free serene mood prevails. LED lighting is integrated behind thinned out panels of marble and work to diffuse the light and add to the glamorous mood.
Not a conventional kitchen at first glance, a richly hued tapestry of colour creates a stunning statement for the sleek, contemporary space set against a sparkling white Thasos marble floor. Elegant Java-tone paneled cabinetry emphasises a lean aesthetic and is complimented with glossy claret and ebony wall treatments, which provide an elegant backdrop to the showpiece Baroque mural in the style of Caravaggio.
