Refurbishment in Coronado
The current house layout, which dates from the 80s, has numerous disadvantageous aspects commonly found in low-budget construction of the area: poor lighting, no natural ventilation, constrained spaces, low ceilings. The client requested an intervention, particularly on these aspects and emphasizing the importance of places for family and friends reunions.
After analyzing what experience is sought when spending time in Panamanian’s beach homes, the proposal seeks to achieve the intrinsic qualities of the hut by decoupling the concept (prototype) from the pattern which derive its main qualities (Archetype): lit space, natural ventilation, open to the environment, but protected from the noise and visual pollution, and covered from the weather. It is for its nature as spotlight of social gathering and comfort that these space is most commonly where Panamanian spends their time when going to the beach house.
The new hut, which, instead of being physically detached from the house, is part of it, is relocated to the rear, in immediate contact with the pool and patio. Access is via a connecting hall from the outside of the house, which invites to approach it from the social area (the hut) and suggests the existence of a second social space in the second floor. The rest of the program is enrolled in a traditional setting, which allows connections to the outside as the ability to isolate from social areas in the event of divergent activities. The windows in private areas, such as rooms, are arranged along the sides of the site, while family sharing areas are connected with the terrace and the courtyard, allowing it to extend to the outdoors while maintaining a sense of privacy from the exterior of the site
