Though Rio de Janeiro has traditionally been unfreindly to bikes there has been a recent wave of cycling related NGO's, community programs, and activism. The proposed project ties into this existing energy by creating a space which will be both a representational spark of progress and a means of fostering community interaction. A large portion of the project is devoted to housing elements of the Re-Cycle Rio program. Re-Cycle Rio will aim to promote a biking community through a network of locally supported cycle mini-hubs, bike building and maitenance classes, and a public mechanics shop. The center will act as a used bike depot where donated bikes are either rehabilitated or recycled and put to new use, specifically in the construction of bike mini hubs.
