The RBM house is a tropical modern residence located in Malang, East Java, on the slope of Mount Kawi. This dwelling space serves as the abode of a mother and her daughter. The design of this house was inspired by the client's desire to create a food garden within its premises. Despite the limited available space, the house was designed in a manner that follows the path of the sun, ensuring that food garden receive maximum sunlight exposure for future crops while minimizing the shadows that cover the garden. The plants are aligned in a west-east direction, which ensures optimal sun exposure.
The facade is arranged in a perpendicular approach regarding the garden alignment, providing minimal glare by facing north. Avoiding the direct sunlight, the volume conceived with successive layers of towering vertical walls that create deep shades for the openings while simultaneously concealing the tropical white shed roof. Given that the structure is shaped by context, the finishes of the building are uniformly rendered in shades of grey, thereby imparting a sense of unity to the entire composition.
Living room as a melting pot space. The rooms inside are arranged in a linear order, placing a light-showered corridor as a datum, leading users to the main area of the living room. The living and dining area is a multi-purpose space that provides sufficient room for engaging in various activities and hobbies. It also opens to a terrace, creating a large, semi-public area. This melting pot also provides a connection between the daughter’s bedroom on the second floor and the living room on the ground floor by a window on the well of light, leaving the absence of loneliness even if no guests or relatives are visiting.
The well of light. The garden-view living room has a well of light as a skylight providing light, air circulation, and a visual connection between the daughter’s bedroom and the living room. This narrow yet wide dark-painted light chimney transfers indirect light from the sky to the kitchen and dissipates the hot air up into the sky. The window-connected bedroom allows the users to call each other if assistance is needed.
