Our task was to design an elementary school that utilizes the maximum allowable area and provide accommodation for summer camp users in summertime. The two main constraints that informed the concept were the site and the client’s requirements. The site is bounded by two water streams at two parallel edges which are in turn bounded by two streets adjacent to the streams. The concept introduced three playground areas of different spatial characteristics to induce different uses by the children, in addition sufficient circulation space were incorporated in the design allowing for smooth flow at peak times. Accordingly, the building massing followed the introduced playgrounds spaces to define different playing spaces for girls/boys (requirement of client) and covered/open space to the playgrounds.
