From student
society to international study centreA beautiful monument with a few sections from the 14th
century had to be renovated into a contemporary institute. Fortunately, the
previous occupants, VVSL, Prentenkabinet
print gallery, had added an empty, bare space over several floors, used as a
kitchen, refectory and later as a book safe, as a result of which a new core
could be added there, a stairwell with a lift. This appeared to be the key to the design.A clear mix
of study areasBy building all the additions - the lift, stairwell,
work surfaces, stacked study areas – in glass and steel, a clear distinction
was made between the restored monumental and the new contemporary. A mix of all
kinds of functions was made in the premises: teaching areas, including a
lecture theatre, work rooms, study cells, a library in the former timbers and
even five rooms for residential students and three small apartments for guest
lecturers.
