A vacant lot that was created out of a large citrus orchard in the
heart of the Rancho Santa Fe Covenant community slightly elevated above
the historic Rancho Santa Fe golf course became the setting for this
custom designed home for a family of 4.
The house was sited on the 3-acre property to take advantage of the
afternoon breezes and to maximize the southern backyard exposure. A home
for a young family to grow into and sized for the family to be
comfortable after the kids leave for college, gave the home a legacy for
possibly several generations. Taking its design cues from the simple
courtyard homes designed by Lilian Rice and other local architects from
the past, this elegant estate provides a simple, yet refined structure
to spend family and social gatherings at many scales.
A tasteful entry courtyard with four pomegranate trees in decorative
metal boxes with a running water fountain creates a private sanctuary
and a wonderful transition from the winding roads and circular driveway.
The courtyard is entered through a rustic pair of oversized, stained
wooden doors under a large entry portal with wood lattice and a tiled
roof.
