The clients were interested in working with the existing topog- raphy of the land which resulted in the entry and main living areas being located on the upper level. This unique configura- tion provides a carport, small workshop, and mud-room under the house.
Views to the surrounding hillside are all encompassing from the Kitchen, Living room, Master Bedroom, and outside covered deck, with floor to ceiling windows in the double-height Family Room located on the lower level.
The sites’ excellent Southern exposure was exploited through the implementation of a continuous band of windows providing passive-heating in Winter. The deep overhanging eaves provide full shade throughout the summertime. Future connections for Solar Hot Water, and a PhotoVoltaic system have been provided on the roof.
The house is cooled through three separate, yet complimentary systems: passive cooling through operable windows, active ven- tilation via attic fan, and a central HVAC high efficiency system.
Stone, taken from the very ground the structure is built upon, was used for the lower level.
This house incorporates a rainwater collection system which provides 100% of the water needs for the family.
