An empty nester was down-sizing houses, and had the opportunity to get her dream home just down the street - quaint ranch on a corner lot. Very early on, she expressed the love of light & openness. Given the layout of the existing home, the owner requested a complete home remodel with scope including: kitchen/living room/dining/ foyer/main hall/office/bedrooms/bathrooms.
One of the main challenges of this project was to create a great room that fused the living, dining, and kitchen program into a comfortable and accommodating space that fit her lifestyle. The second hurdle was to reconfigure the bedroom wing for work, guest, and a new luxurious master suite; all of which pivot directly off the main entry and great room.
The existing kitchen was tight and closed off, which forced our hand early in the design phase. By demolishing two existing walls of the kitchen, we created an airy, blank slate; however, several linear feet dedicated to cabinetry and storage was lost in the process. Our solution translated new storage and kitchen program along a continuous wall, which serves as a backdrop for the new open space. A secondary wall was modified to contain large appliances.
A new vaulted ceiling became a clear solution for the great room to help create a proportional volume for the living room, dining, and kitchen. A special feature of this space includes a double crown moulding detail with concealed LED lighting. The floors were also refinished and a high bead-board wainscoting brings visitors and the home-owner down an inviting hallway to an office with new french patio doors, a fresh guest bedroom, and a bathroom with a hidden washer & dryer, as well as a serene master suite. In addition, all new, low-e windows were installed through-out the home. Ranch Reno successfully accomplishes the goals of the client and now has its own story.
