On a small island off the coast of British Columbia, a family set out to create a summer outpost immersed in nature. Located above windswept bluff where forest meets high meadow, the site is oriented southeast, offering wide views of the ocean, long hours of summer sun, and a front-row seat to passing storms. After a season of camping on the land, the clients approached Laura Killam Architecture (LKA) and Sophie Burke Design (SBD) to realize their vision of a relaxed, outdoor-oriented, ranch inspired home.
The project consists of two buildings — The Cabin and The Barn — arranged in an L-formation to create a series of protected outdoor spaces. Living and sleeping areas are accessed independently from the exterior, reinforcing the informal, nature-immersed character of the retreat. The Barn provides a large flexible space for gathering and games, and a breezeway for shade and passage.
Indoor and outdoor spaces are carefully curated for the summer climate through deep roof overhangs, generous decks, and a variety of shaded zones. An outdoor shower and bathing area create an informal spa space, while the low-lying structures allow for a seamless connection between meadow and interior.
Material choices reflect the rugged context and coastal exposure. Rough-sawn cedar cladding on the exterior is left untreated to weather to silver, while inside, the same boards are stained a soft grey to create a calming retreat from the sun. Durable, farmstead-inspired furnishings reinforce a casual, low-maintenance atmosphere.
The result is a warm, robust, and flexible compound where indoor and outdoor living blend effortlessly. Designed for long summer stays and spontaneous gatherings, the final design fosters connection — to land, family, and the unhurried rhythms of island life.
