Converting an existing rammed earth
barn into a residence for two people presented an interesting challenge: how to
preserve the integrity and material presence of this unfinished structure while
providing for the conveniences of modern life.
The architects inserted a
cabinet-like wood structure into the existing rammed earth shell. A
timber-framed loft takes advantage of the barn’s volume, and creates a more
intimate scale to the living quarters above and below. The warm tones and crisp
details of the new materials complement the striated, permanent quality of the
rammed earth.
