Located behind a row of shophouses in the city center, the project redefines ramen dining through a sequence that balances architectural clarity with nature. Instead of the narrow, dimly lit interiors typical of ramen shops, the experience unfolds outdoors.
Access begins through a discreet tunnel within the shophouse, leading to an unexpected courtyard at the rear. Inspired by the ascent of Mount Papandayan, the tunnel serves as a threshold that shifts pace and perception. Lined with raw stone and native vegetation, it prepares visitors for the calm, expansive garden beyond.
At the core of the site, an indoor coffeeshop and semi-outdoor ramen dining area were realized through the adaptive reuse of a former warehouse. This approach minimized construction waste and allowed for an efficient transformation. New structural additions are built in all-white steel, introducing a serene architectural language that remains light and restrained. The intervention is intentionally subtle, designed to coexist with the organic presence of greenery as a natural element.
Dining spaces are arranged to balance intimacy and openness, accommodating different social settings while maintaining a consistent spatial rhythm through lightweight architectural elements. Soft shadows cast by trees, filtered daylight, and material honesty become integral to the atmosphere, both indoors and outdoors.
The garden, once barren and unshaded, was intentionally planted with Sengon trees to create a cooler microclimate for outdoor dining. These fast-growing, productive trees not only provide shade and comfort but can also be harvested in the future, reinforcing the idea of a cyclical and evolving landscape.
At the rear of the plot, a spacious prayer room acknowledges the site’s role as a communal space. Designed in a contemporary manner, the diagonal massing aligns with the qibla direction. Its walls are built with glass blocks that filter daylight and views, producing a sense of privacy while maintaining spatial openness. Light enters softly, reinforcing the project’s ethos of calm and clarity.
This project transforms an overlooked commercial plot into a layered public destination. By merging architecture, landscape, and outdoor experience, it offers a rooted and measured alternative to the fast rhythm of the city.
