The design for this railway bridge not only had to respond to the natural beauty of the site, but also an expected differential movement of more than a metre over the 100 year lifetime of the bridge. The elegant design solution uses a distinctive enclosed extradosed structure to follow a single soaring arc through 3 dimensional space. It is both simple and dynamic, creating a stunning and contemporary contrast to the ruin of the old stone bridge. Built using internal steel cables and modular precast concrete construction, the bridge will have a zero carbon footprint and require only minimal maintenance.
