The new Radiotherapy Centre in Kalisz is a part of the public health care system, yet its innovative, environmentally-friendly and attractive design represents a radical break from the utilitarian layout commonly associated with public hospitals. The inviting design of the Centre is warm and welcoming, it also offers patients cutting-edge technology typically found only in large hospitals in bigger cities.
This investment bridges a gap in oncology services because radiotherapy and cancer screening were underserviced in a location far from any larger city. The Radiotherapy Centre is an independent medical establishment with a complete oncology treatment programme and diagnostics area. This building consists of three separate areas: diagnostics, an oncology clinic, and a therapeutic area with linear accelerators, a simulator and CT scanner.
Given the negative perceptions of cancer and its treatment, this modern hospital is designed to be as patient-friendly and home-like as possible, all within the strict budgetary constraints of a public health institution. Interior design keeps balance between interesting decor and sensible use of funds, out of respect for public opinion, still maintaining a very pleasing effect. A combination of texture and color enriches the simple materials used to create an unconventional space.
Located in a hospital park, the structure was designed to fit into its natural surroundings and the existing houses in the suburban area. The Centre is connected to the existing hospital through a sky passage with the small café building. Such spatial configuration makes that the project will be replicated by other health institutions.
This patient-centred facility, with its ample natural lighting and close contact with nature, provides a pleasant, healing environment. Glass walls and three skylights open the interior spaces to the natural surroundings. After sunset, the building emanates a soft, pleasant light to sustain the home-like atmosphere.
