Radio Park redefines the possibilities of urban rooftop landscapes by transforming the 2/3-acre rooftop on top of Radio City Music Hall into a multi-purpose biophilic retreat and event space for Rockefeller Center’s tenants and guests. This immersive urban garden integrates seamlessly into the landmark’s architectural legacy while offering a vital connection to nature within the dense urban fabric of New York City.
Inspired by the historical precedent of Rockefeller Center’s 1930s rooftop gardens, Radio Park was designed as a modern-day “village green”—a communal gathering space that fosters well-being, productivity, and social interaction. Elevated ten floors above street level, the park offers an immersive sensory experience with dense woodland groves, open meadows, and sculpted topography that shields visitors from the surrounding urban environment. Through careful spatial choreography, the design transitions from shaded woodland paths into a sunlit central lawn, offering a layered experience that evokes movement through a natural landscape.
Using a contemporary interpretation of Beaux-Arts landscape traditions, the park employs native and adaptive plant communities, resilient materials, and innovative lightweight growing media to overcome structural and environmental challenges. The result is a resilient, ecologically rich urban oasis that contributes to Rockefeller Center’s cultural narrative while providing a restorative landscape for its tenants.
