Situated in highly desirable coastal location, where a 1960's chalet bungalow previously occupied the large L-shaped site, PWP Architects were engaged to design a contemporary 5-bedroom house for modern family living.
PWP worked alongside the clients to help realise their aspirations for the site, preparing a scheme for a dynamic modern house that addresses the coastal location.
The radial form was developed in direct response to the opportunities of the site, making the most of the views across the harbour whilst also providing sunny courtyards and private terraces.
A double height circular hall and gallery provide a dramatic focal point to the house, whilst also unveiling and framing views. The open plan layout with walls of glass give an inside outside feel, whilst the timber canopy provides privacy and shelter to the northern balconies.
PWP worked closely with the landscape architect to prepare a considered scheme.
The design incorporates renewable energy and solar systems, with solar thermal panels providing hot water and heat recovery to save energy. The construction method makes the most of passive techniques, with a high thermal mass to absorb and release heat in waves to stabilise the internal temperature throughout the year, and reduce the energy demand.
