R E V olution mediatekCompetition for Addition to STOCKHOLM LIBRARYKnowledge----- Once thought accretive and concrete, is reflected in the stoic forms of Asplund’s Temple of Knowledge: cylinder sits on cube.Invert-----Today data’s seen as fluid, dynamic. In the R E V olution mediatek the volumes and experiences are inverted: cubes are in the cylinder. Books hover around you, instead of you around the books...Media Cabs-----Newsprint machines of the last century reemerge in refined form spinning media cabs. Each of varying metal alloy, their shells represent different categories. They rotate at differing speeds according to their media load around the giant glazed tube. Ideas fly through the air at random speeds and movement is simulated in the mind’s eye, encouraging brainstorming.
Selection-----A hand gesture slows the flow and allows one to zap a selection through the glass, “signing out” the media unit (book, dvd, wii game.) It then pops out on a shelf. Books are stacked sideways: no more tilting heads to read titles. Booklife is extended by suspending the tactile from the intellect- grubby hands can still finger through books in the original library where traditional bookcases remain. Expansion-----Media units accrete, delete over time, affecting the transparency of the cylindrical R E V mediatek. Where gaps of knowledge occur (say between Derrida’s deconstructions and causality jive) blue sky remains, casting shadows as clouds on the Dream Platform.
Dream Platform-----This is the sum of all corridor spaces otherwise needed and is function-neutral. An extension of public space aligned with the diagonal Avenue Karlsbergs, it scoops visitors up into a grand world reminiscent of Boullee’s imaginings via a giant inviting stairway, punctuated with pan-accessible bridges to different levels. Michelangelo-----Like the Spanish Steps in Rome this urban gathering space will be a place to assemble, flirt and feed pigeons.
