Qunming Lake, located in the heart of Beijing Shougang Industrial Park, covers an area of 23 ha. Before the renovation, the lake was an industrial circulating pool. After experiencing the "garden factory" period of the industrial era and post-industrial renovation, the final natural environment and industrial buildings, Chinese classical style garden buildings and large sports venues, especially the 60-meter-high "Big Air" built for the 2022 Winter Olympics, form a special urban magical temperament.
Before its renovation, the lake was 6 meters deep, almost without any green space around it. After the renovation, the water depth was lowered to a 4m, and the water surface was reduced for increasing green areas, freeing up public space for use. Through entering the water at levels through the revetments, the emergent plants are planted to enhance the self-purification ability of the water body, as well as to reflect the original industrial wilderness temperament.
The northeast corner of the innovated lake is divided into a demonstration wetland area and an open green area using the existing dam. In order to continue the memory of the site, the cooling spray matrix of concrete pillars on the north side of the lake was left, and a submerged plank road like a “Moses Crossing the Sea” meandered in it, suggesting that tourists are “injecting” into the pool with the same identity as “water”, providing a new perspective to watch the lake view. The west side and the south side of the lake are covered with green plants. In the center of the lake and around the antique buildings on the south side, newly-designed squares, garden paths, and vegetation are interspersed among them, allowing the continuation of the historical style and accepting more functions.
