An honorable mention for a re-use of the airport in Quito, Ecuador. This project uses the Ecuadorian flag to underpin the design. The yellow-or land, is used as park and agricultural space. The blue, the water, is in the old runway area. The water unites the design along the length of the site. At the ends are tipped planes of water that unite the sky and ground perceptually. The ends contain the runway debris (saving the energy it would take to move the concrete offsite) and give a view of the volcanoes in that surround the valley. Three lakes compose the water element, these lakes support agriculture, urban use and native habitat. They are the blue of the flag - the waters of the country which give life to all. The markets are 'red', symbolizing the blood of the people. The market spaces also respond to astrological signs during the months of the battle for freedom - an important marker for the people of the country. In this market zone, a community center and conference center occupies the new terminal building which is now anchored at the ends by new hotels. These hotels are a visual landmark defining the new northern district of the city in addition to framing a view from the main gathering space along the central lake. The towers' trapezoidal shape in section shields the facades from heat gain from the sun at the equator. The genial climate allows these buildings to operate free of any heating and cooling energy.Across the lake from the towers is a gathering space, an immediate park for the people from converting the exising golf course and keeping the plantings and topography intact.Gabriel Diaz-Montemayor,Kevin Hinders,Andy Wilcox,Milagros Zingoni,Tyler Stradling,Samantha Sears, collaborators.
