SYNArchitecture (www.synarchitecture.com) renovated a store in San Jose, Costa Rica, located in an exclusive shopping center in Escazu — a trendy area for major developments in the city. Users are invited from the hallway, where sinuous movements emerge gently from the monochromatic facade. The entrance is smoothly indicated by an overall gesture, where the movement gains its deepest relief.
The Austrian studio refurbished Quique Boutique with an elegant and progressive design. The process started with a digital and parametric design, with a dynamic stream running through the store on a conceptual level. Different frequencies are also captured into architectural elements. An alluring interior transforms the movement from the exterior into an expressive ceiling and a prominent sculptural counter with strong lines, yet still giving a lightweight appearance.
The effect created by mirroring the ceiling and the floor established two distinct areas, one holds the beachwear and the the other accommodates an urban clothing line. As a result, all common architectural elements turn into a meaningful function while also conveying key information to the user.
The project seeks to give a readable but still unexpected shopping experience for customers; for example, creating new angles, projecting graphical lines built in architectural components, and amplifying the ceiling all contribute to the unique Quique experience. Due to the great variety of products that Quique showcases, the architects decided to choose the absence of color for the space with a system based on a dichotomy of black and white.
The project aimed to use local resources; however, in order to further develop the architectural language fundamental components unavailable in this region were imported from Europe. The facade, counter, and the ceiling elements are CNC milled in Breitenfeld, Austria, then exported and finished in San Jose. This was possible thanks to CNC-routing technology supported through our strategic partner Agropac (www.agropac.at), and the excellent support of a refined craftsmanship team located in Costa Rica.
