Archimedia proposed that the Amenities Building be placed at the edge of the terrace that would comprise the camping area. This placed the Amenities Building between the camping area and the view / connection to the centre of Queenstown and Queenstown Bay. This allowed all campers to have access to and enjoy the premium part of the site. This location also extended the built form of a number of adjacent cabins along the outer edge of the terrace to provide closure to the camping area where a transient and changing use is ongoing.

Archimedia proposed the Camp Amenities be split into two buildings offset from each other, to provide varied peopled areas around the buildings. The overall building form departs from the usual building type associated with the camping ground. The forms reinforce the central communal nature of their use and contrast with the simple nature of temporary tent forms. The forms respond to the similar roof forms of the adjacent cabins, the dramatic landform and the beautiful views to Queenstown Bay and the Remarkables beyond. The roof plane had been penetrated with parapets and skylights to offer a jagged edge against the mountain backdrop. A simple pallet has been used to provide a robust composition to the exterior. Bold colours to the interior have been selected to create a lively clean and fresh experience for users.

NZIA RESENE LOCAL AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE 2001
Jury Citation: This new amenities building goes far beyond the standard, small, dark buildings usually associated with camping grounds. The generosity of space and glazing, opening up to its stunning environment, along with its restrained use of quality materials makes it a refreshing and vibrant response to the client’s brief. This is a work of clarity that sits well in its context whilst acting as a foil to the chaos and colour of camping life.

NZIA RESENE NEW ZEALAND AWARD FOR ARCHITECTURE 2002
Jury Citation: This ensemble of facilities buildings sets a new benchmark of design for New Zealand camping grounds. The flyaway roof forms are reminiscent of tents of campsites. These distinctive forms help to unify the development. Materials have been selected with care and the light, airy spaces within the buildings are friendly, inviting and encourage people to use them.
