The owner of this home wanted the exterior to suggest a West-Coast flavour that is both rugged and refined. This has been accomplished through a judicious use of cedar shingle, board & batten, and lap siding, bluestone cladding and coping, and rough-hewn timber beams. The layup of these exterior materials into defined base, middle and upper zones contributes to the great street presence and solidity of the home. The metal roofed "tower" element seen from the outside is an important feature that contains an open children's playroom on the upper floor with an orientation towards views to the North-Shore mountains beyond. The interior design follows the owner's requirements for it to be bright, contemporary and un-fussy, suiting the lives of a young family with pre-teen children. Materials were selected for their beauty and durability. Main floor living is centred around a most generously proportioned great room, with easy access through broad openings to a spacious rear yard. The subtle clean line details such as flush base boards provide continuity throughout the home, seamlessly joining built millwork to wall and floor surfaces. Special attention was given to lighting so that ambient settings and feature wall areas are appropriately illuminated and easily adjusted at the push of a button from the integrated home automation system.
