The Queen Anne Library, built in 1913 and one of Seattle’s best-preserved Carnegie-funded branches, had a slate roof that had reached the end of its life. Leaks, failing flashings, and worn materials were starting to threaten the building and its original features.
Stemper AC teamed up with the Seattle Public Library, preservation specialists, and the Queen Anne Historical Society to create a restoration plan that would protect the building for decades while honoring its historic character. Our team carefully researched the library’s history, coordinated with slate quarries in New York and Vermont to source matching multi-colored tiles, and recreated decorative copper elements that had been lost over time.
The result is a roof that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern waterproofing—faithful to the original look but built to last. Completed in 2023, the project earned the Public Stewardship Award from the Queen Anne Historical Society.
