Restoring historic values
Het Godshuis, a care complex in the centre of Roermond, is one of the most integrated facilities for the elderly in an urban area. The adjacent city block housing the former “cocaine pellet prison” became free for redevelopment. The ‘Arresthuis’ with a cell block dating from 1850 has been converted into a beautiful city hotel for Luiten Van der Valk . The old bishop’s palace, dating from 1650, will once again be made suitable for habitation. Anything built after 1850 may be demolished. On these newly available sites, urban service apartments have been designed where the residents may purchase care services from the nearby Godshuis.
The great thing about this project is the integration of existing and new buildings, the semi-public inner courtyard and the restoration of historic values in the urban environment.
